RE: Voluntary Withdrawal of Molly B’s Gluten Free Kitchen Brand Belgian Waffle & Pancake Mix

We are writing to all our loyal supporters and consumers of Molly B’s Gluten Free Kitchen Brand Belgian Waffle & Pancake Mix about the recent voluntary withdrawal of our product from the Ontario market to ensure that our gluten-free customer’s safety is not compromised.

Here are the details. On October 16, 2013, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) reported that a random test of Molly B’s Gluten Free Kitchen Brand Belgian Waffle & Pancake Mix UPC: 8 39234009141 Lot # 914130509 was found to contain 48 parts per million of undeclared gluten. As a precautionary measure, the CFIA was recommending a Class 3 recall be initiated which is considered to represent a low to no risk health risk to consumers.

When the Canadian Food Inspection Agency reported its findings to Molly B, we were very surprised and as celiacs ourselves extremely concerned, for after all we are certified as a gluten free facility by GFCO and we have never used any glutenous ingredients in any of our products. This product as all others produced at Molly B are tested for gluten using approved methods in our in-house laboratory before, during and after production. Never has any ingredient used or final product exceeded the regulatory standard of 20 ppm for gluten. In fact, final product tests have consistently shown < 5 ppm which is the equivalent of non-detectable.  However, based on the CFIA recommendation, Molly B immediately conducted an investigation and found the lot in question (10 cases) had been sold to two retailers. Product was returned from one retailer and we anxiously subjected it to testing again using approved methods and it was found to be <5 ppm or non-detectable. This was reported to CFIA as well as our questions arising around the confidence of the sampling method and testing that was conducted to get their result. We await their response.

In summary, you should be aware that the CFIA finding applies to a limited sample (1 bag) taken from only one lot amounting to 10 cases. Our internal controls showed that these were distributed to only two retailers in Ontario. Also, the voluntary, Class 3 recall carries low to no risk to human health. However, we at Molly B are continuing to investigate this incident and use this as an opportunity to improve our food safety and gluten-free management procedures to which we are strongly committed.

Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any additional questions and we are sorry if this has caused any concerns for any of you.  We wanted to make sure that all parties involved with our products are fully informed and satisfied with the safety precautions that we take at Molly B’s.

Thank you for your help and support in getting this message out to all of your members.

Sincerely,

Fran Earle, President

Welcome to the Molly B’s Gluten Free Kitchen website

Welcome to the Molly B’s Gluten Free Kitchen website. If this is your first visit, please be assured we’re going to be adding to it and giving you more of what you’re looking for. If you’ve been here before, I hope you enjoy our new look and would certainly welcome your comments.

When we started Molly B’s, we had no idea what the reaction to our recipes might be. All we knew was that there was no excuse for food that wasn’t even tasty enough to serve to family and guests. Personally, I’ve always found great joy in good food, and I was resolved that our recipes would deliver the best we could serve, and use only quality ingredients.

At Molly B’s, we think of you and your family as our guests. People with gluten free sensitivities, celiac disease, or who are concerned about undue additives and preservatives in their diet and want a healthy alternative, have fewer choices on what eat. But at least they should taste good! At Molly B’s, we have a simple rule: if it doesn’t taste good, we don’t sell it. It’s that simple. As we expand our website to include more information to help you make smart choices, and share responses with you from our many wonderful customers, I hope we can help you re-discover the pleasure of eating tasty foods that also are good for you. Come back and visit soon. And remember, please send us your comments or suggestions; we’d love to hear from you!
